This painting was created from a photograph that I personally took at the Vancouver Aquarium, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This Beluga Whale (Delphinapterus Leucas) was taking a time-out from his routine to study the crowd. It's extremely dis-heartening to see this magnificent, gentle, and unimaginably intellegent being in such an artificial surrounding. Known as the 'Canary of the Sea' for its alluring song, this second-largest member of the Dolphin family is grey at birth and does not become completely white until about 6yrs. of age. Of all the whales only the Beluga and its cousins, Dolphins (salt and fresh-water) and Porpoise, are able to move their heads freely, while the largest member of their family, the Killer Whale (Orca) cannot. The Beluga is also the only member of its family that does not have a dorsal fin, which is why they're aptly named "Delphinapterus" (dolphin-without-a-wing). I painted the background in a color that is representative of the frigid dark Arctic and Sub-Arctic waters of the Beluga's natural environment. They are 1 of only 3 Whales that spend their entire lives in Arctic waters along with the Bowhead and Narwhal. I long for the day when I'm able to view these unique beings in the surroundings which God created for them, not the concrete barricades in which we imprison them. I will require the name, address, and phone number of the winning bidder, so that I can keep full account of my collected originals. I may possibly, from time-to-time, request to borrow any such originals from collectors on the honour system, so that I may enter them into juried shows and exhibitions (of course, I would pay for shipping and insurance both ways). I would hope that any serious collector can appreciate and honour this.
