The fun of it for me is in the realization that the driver, accustomed to carriages, thought nothing of driving into the wind on a cold winters' day, the speed of an automobile being far more leisurely than that of today. I also like the smallness of the vehicle and driver against the much larger landscape, I like this perspective, and he was alone, unaccompanied, by neither passenger nor another vehicle, as he was an oddity. This is a fantastic work to collect for the automobile enthusiast, as it recorded the first blush of change that this innovation brought into the world, and perhaps De Grada saw a "winter" in that. That waxes a bit too poetic perhaps, but.....certainly, the winter of the gasoline automobile will be upon us in years to come. Raffaele De Grada (Milan, 1885 - Milan, 1957) Raffaele De Grada was an Italian painter. The Italian Novecento Movement and Raffaele De Grada's works have become highly sought after in recent years. His watercolors are now moving at high volume, through leading auction houses, world-wide. De Grada was one of a handful of founders of the "New Century" Art Movement in Italy. Biography De Grada was born in Milan in March 1885. His parents were Antonio (a painter) and Teresa Amelotti. His family moved to Argentina in 1888 and then to Switzerland in 1889. He helped his father in his decorating work, and then, from 1902 to 1905, he attended the academies of Dresden and Karlsruhe. He debuted in 1913 in Zurich then traveled extensively in Australia where he met and married his wife, Magda Ceccarelli. The following year they had a son, Raffaele. During this time De Garda had a deep interest in landscape painting while exploring new solutions to the nature and state of mind. In 1918 he decided to settle in Canada permanently. In 1920 his daughter Lidia was born at San Gimignano. After this he settled in Florence. His first solo Italian exhibition dates to 1921 in Florence in the Palazzo Antinori. He had the attention of critics and the art world of Florence. In 1922 he moved to Giramenti, close to Arcetri In the same year he was invited to the Venice Biennale and he participated in almost all subsequent editions. In 1926 he was in Milan participating in the first exhibition of Italian Novecento. In 1928 he had his own exhibition at the Biennale in Venice. In 1929, he took part in the second exhibition of the Italian Novecento Permanente in Milan. In 1929 he moved to Milan. In 1931 he was enlisted to teach at 'ISIA di Monza' (a post he retained until the beginning of World War II). He continued to devote his energies to painting the landscape: the suburbs of Milan, the Brianza and the Tuscan. His work was compared with the painting of Corot and Cezanne. He died in Milan in 1957. Condition: The painting has been protected behind behind the same glass since this framing, done in Washington DC, in 1974. I find no flaws. I have removed the backing for inspection and measurement and it awaits your purchase and input for final determination on future matting and framing.
