Description
LA BOHEME (Opera Art) original oil painting by JAMES SULKOWSKI This original oil painting of the opera , LA BOHEME, was painted in 1983 by James Sulkowski during the time he was appointed Artist-in-Residence of the Pittsburgh Opera. This canvas measures 10 feet by 7 feet . For two seasons , Mr. Sulkowski sketched at dress rehearsals . The result was a series of 30 oil paintings, watercolors and drawings depicting over 20 operas . These paintings were featured in a major art exhibit held at the ( now extinct) Oldfield Gallery in 1983 in Pittsburgh. Subsequently , Sulkowski was invited to show his Opera Art at Chautauqua Institution in the summer of 1984 in conjunction with their 50th anniversary of Opera performances. Sulkowski exhibited these works at the famed Atheneum Hotel; the only artist ever invited to exhibit in this landmark structure. Next, Sulkowski’s Opera Art was exhibited at the Metropolitan Opera Gallery in New York in the fall of 1984 . The Met has one of Sulkowski’s originals in their collection; Il Pagliacci. For about two years , the Met sold postcards and note cards featuring Sulkowski’s art in their giftshop as well as his small bronze sculptures of opera characters such as Rigoletto, Siegfried and Faust . James Sulkowski was born in Pittsburgh,PA in 1951. He studied at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh and most notably at The Art Students League of New York with Frank Mason. It was during his five years of study with Mason that Sulkowski learned the concepts and techniques of the Great Masters. James has taught for over 20 years at his own Academy of Fine Art as well as in National workshops. He has been featured in several issues of American Artist magazine as well as WORKSHOP Magazine ( also published by American Artist )and his work has been published by North Light books in both of their BEST OF FLOWER PAINTING volumes. He’s won several awards including the prestigious HELEN DE COZEN award at the 64th GRAND NATIONAL EXHIBITION of the American Artists Professional League that was held at The National Arts Club of New York.
